I want to become a Food Safety Trainer – FAQ
We get a lot of queries from people who want to become Food Safety Trainers or HACCP Trainers so here are a few answers to frequently asked questions.
Q: Do I need experience in the food industry?
A: It is recommended that you have competency in the area that you train in. Therefore it is strongly recommended that you have experience in the food industry. Remember you will be training people who have worked in the industry for a long time.
Q: What qualification do I need to become a food safety trainer?
A: It is recommended that at a minimum you have a qualification a level higher than the level you are teaching and a training qualification such as train the trainer.
Q: I want to train my own staff in level 1 and 2 Food Safety & HACCP. Do I need to do a level 3 course?
A: Yes, it is strongly recommended that you complete a level 3 course.
Q: I want to train up my restaurant manager / head chef to become an in-house food safety trainer for the rest of my staff, is this possible?
A: Yes, we recommend that you chose a competent staff member and they should complete a Level 3 Food Safety & HACCP Course and a Train the Trainer Course.
Q: Can an in-house trainer issue certificates to employees?
A: Yes, as long as they are a competent trainer and they deliver training in line with the FSAI Guidelines.
Q: Can I become a freelance trainer or start a training business.
A: Yes, as with any business this will take careful consideration and planning to ensure feasibility.
Q: Is there a recommended course for future trainers?
A: We recommend the NHP (National Hygiene Partnership) Level 3 Food Safety & HACCP Management course. There is a section dedicated to training others on this course.
Q: Can I join a professional body for Food Safety Trainers?
A: There are several organisations such as the FSPA, NHP and EHAI which all have specific criteria for membership including, qualifications & experience. Please don’t hesitate to ask for further information on these.
